The competition is aimed at fashion students from universities, academies and fashion schools. Each year a fashion school from India, West Africa or South America participates as an exclusive partner.
The task at hand: to design a collection according to the motto "World Robes", using fabrics from different countries. Within a semester or school year a small collection of "World Robes" should be created. It should consist of approximately 10 outfits and several accessories. The special aspect is that German Agro Action provides some of the fabrics. They come from countries where German Agro Action is actively involved in projects - in Latin America, India and Africa - and they are manufactured in accordance with ecological and social standards.
The participants are allowed to decide how they design their collections. The exciting aspect is working with the textiles. They are made of very different materials with widely varying patterns and are often foreign and unusual: for instance cotton with traditional printed motifs from Mali, delicate Paisley silk from Southern India, thick hand-woven, woollen cloth in glowing colours of the rainbow from the Peruvian Andes. The aim of the competition is to set these beautiful and varied fabrics in a new, modern context, so that collections with individual and surprising fashion statements emerge.
German Agro Action will accompany the up-and-coming designers during the entire competition with lectures and presentations. It also provides research material. This enables participants to get in the right mood for the topic and encourages them to discover their own approaches.
The students document their ideas and their implementation with photos, drawings and collages - a valuable source of documentation and at the same time the basis for a prominent specialist jury to evaluate the results. All World Robes models are presented to a large audience at a professional fashion show. The jury chooses the respective most interesting model from each participating school or university and awards the winners.
